IMG_8123 - resizedSkolkovo Moscow School of Management came away from the 12th Global MBA Trophy in Mikrolimano, Pireaus, Greece with their third victory in three attempts. Their number 1 team put on a flawless display on day 1 of the regatta, finishing with three first places, and they rounded off day two with three seconds. This was 2016’s first regatta in the Sunsail MBA Global Sailing League.

London Business School won second place, by winning the last race, and coming home second in the first two. INSEAD were third, while Skolkovo’s second team were punished for inconsistency, finishing fourth despite winning two races.

114 sailors arrived in Mikrolimano to sail on the 11 Platu 25s that made up the “A division, and the 7 Beneteau 49s in the “B” division. The regatta began with unseasonably strong winds on Thursday 21st April, which meant that crews were prevented from practicing by a “Lima” flag on the Yacht Club flagpole. Forced to enjoy the warm sunny weather, the sailors registered for the event, attended the briefing and then gathered at the Yacht Club of Greece’s magnificent clubhouse overlooking Pireaus and Faliron bay. skolkovo logoMoscow’s Skolkovo School of Management, in only their second year participating in the Sunsail MBA Global Sailing League have emerged as champions.

Despite being unable to compete at the Rolex MBA’s Regatta in Santa Margharita Ligure, and so scoring a maximum 19 points for that regatta, their consistent first and second places in the other regattas of the season has meant that they out- score London Business School, whose joint seventh place in the Bocconi – organised regatta gives them 25 points to Skolkovo’s 24.

Skolkovo have taken the league by storm in 2015. where they were able to compete, they won in Athens, Le Havre and Medemblik, and were second to a local pro skipper in the Solent. Continue reading “Skolkovo are the 2015 Sunsail MBA Global Sailing League Champions”

For the second year running, the crew from MIT Sloan won the Rolex MBA Conference and regatta. They were held close by a strong Bocconi team.

The regatta, as always, took place off the Ligurian coast, based out of Santa Margharita Ligure, Italy.

The MIT crew had come first in the Beneteau 36.7 division on Friday and Saturday on countback,  on the same points as Bocconi, both teams winning two races and coming second in two.

They had a blip in Sunday’s semi- final, coming second to the team from IMD, but went on to win the four boat final, pushing Bocconi, who had won their own semi final,  into second place.

League leaders Skolkovo were not qualified to participate.

Home Team win the Cranfield Regatta

2 (271)Cranfield Business School won the 2015 edition of the Cranfield Regatta, winning three races out of the five. This season’s leading team, Skolkovo could only manage second place, winning the two other races. INSEAD came in third, while 2014 winners, LBS came in 4th.

The Cranfield team was led by a professional skipper and first mate, provided by the charter company.

The Cranfield regatta marks the mid point of the Sunsail MBA Global Sailing League, and is sailed on the waters of the Solent, between the Isle of Wight and the Mainland on the South Coast of England. The waters are famous for their tricky tidal currents, and frequent traffic – whether it be other racing yachts or massive cargo ships.

The Sunsail MBA Global Sailing League’s sponsor, Sunsail, provided the boats, the race committee and a lot of the organisation. The boats are Sunsail’s matched fleet of Beneteau F40s, which provide a different challenge to the smaller boats seen in most of the series’s regattas: Crews of 8, 42 ft boats and large symetrical spinnakers with dip-pole gybing. LBS cling onto the top of the rankings

2 (100)London Business School manage to hold onto the top spot in the MBA sailing rankings despite their 6th place at the ABC regatta in Le Havre. Meanwhile the Skolkovo team added a second first place in 2015 to their second place fron 2014 to move up three places to third place.  HEC move up to second place, while Kellogg/WHU drop from second to fourth after missing the ABC.

Rotterdam are the other mover, climbing 2 places to 6th.

LBS owe their position to their first place at the 2014 Cranfield regatta,  third at the 2014 RSM regatta and 4th at the 2014 Bocconi regatta, while Skolkovo are still handicapped by missing the 2014 Cranfield and Bocconi regattas.

Will everything change after this week’s 2015 Cranfield regatta?
