The Global MBA Trophy returned after the Pandemic, back to its long- term home of Piraeus, Greece on the 7-10 April 2022. After a 2 year hiatus due to COVID and a 3 year gap since it was last held in Greece in 2018, normal service was resumed with Ugo Alvazzi del Frate’s MIP team winning the third regatta in a row in these waters.
Second place was Tuck, returning to the regatta after many years, having won in 2008, and third place were Imperial, participating for the first time as a complete team.
In division B, Tuck 2 won the trophy, with HEC second and AUEB third.
The regatta, organised by London Business School’s Alumni Sailing Club was a massive affair – with 170 participants – a significant increase on recent years, reflecting the absence of MBA racing for the last 2 years, and enthusiasm for getting back on the water. There were 25 boats on the water, ably managed by the race officers from the host Yacht Club of Greece. The YCG also hosted 2 receptions on Thursday and Saturday night in their magnificent clubhouse, while the crews partied hard at the water’s edge at Istioploikos restaurant on the Friday night.
Racing was made up of 8 windward- leeward races for division A and a combination of a Coastal race in big winds and two triangular courses for the cruising boats in Division B.
The organisers thanked the generous sponsors Everypay, Jack and Jenny, Henri Lloyd, Cotswolds Distillery, Fever Tree and Hambledon Vineyard, sponsoring welcome drinks, breakfasts and event polo shirts as well as some impressive prizes for the winners.
