Skolkovo retain Winter Regatta title

Moscow’s Skolkovo business school took away the top two places at the IE Winter regatta in Lanzarote. Winning three out of the four points races between them.

INSEAD took the third spot on the podium.

The first day of racing in Puerto Calero was cancelled due to high winds.

The regatta was divided into two classes by the results of the early race positions (Division A the leading boats and Division B the remainder), with both classes starting together but points being awarded based on the position in class. MIP win the MBA Global Sailing League for the first time

Global MBA Trophy 2018Scoring a second place in the First 36.7 fleet at the MBA’s Cup regatta in Italy, first place at the Global MBA Trophy in Greece and second at the MBA Winter regatta in Lanzarote, MIP advanced to the top of the MBA sailing league as the season ended. This is the first time the team from Milan have won the league. The full league table can be found here.

In a year where there was no ABC regatta, all five results counted, which meant that Skolkovo, who had been leading the standings with three first places in Lanzarote, The Solent and Porto missed out by scoring 20 points by not participating in Sta Margherita. Skolkovo’s crew won the IE MBA Winter regatta in March 2018.

MIP came second and IE 3rd in Lanzarote.

MBA Winter Regatta: 16 -19 March

The Instituto de Empresa (IE) business school has announced the dates for its MBA Winter Regatta, which will again be held in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote.  The racing will be on Saturday and Sunday 17/18 March, with participants arriving on 16 March and returning on the 19th.

There is an “Early bird” sign- up system in place: The cost is  €499 until 18 December, and €559 thereafter until mid January. Sign up is via the IE sailing club website https://clubs.ie.edu/iesailing/events/

INSEAD are the 2017 Sunsail MBA Global Sailing League Champions

22449793_870626063096960_908794931433048489_nAfter scoring their third first place of the year at the Rolex MBA’s Conference and Regatta, INSEAD stamped their authority on the league, scoring half the points of their two nearest rivals. The full league table can be found here.

INSEAD won at the start of the season in Lanzarote, in the middle of the year on the Solent, and then at the end of the season at Santa Margherita. In the meantime, they came third at the ABC and 4th at the Global MBA Trophy, and discard their points from the RSM regatta. INSEAD win MBA Winter Regatta

Spyros Papantoniou and his crew from INSEAD romped home to win the MBA winter at Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, winning all 5 races.  The regatta was held over the 10th and 11th of March in the Canary Islands, and was hosted by Instituto de Empresa (IE).

Trailing in INSEAD’s wake were four boats from London Business School, who ended up 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. The other participants in the regatta were IE and RSM. Continue reading “INSEAD win MBA Winter Regatta”

RSM kick off the year with a win in Lanzarote

The fourth MBA Winter Regatta in Lanzarote, Club-Regattas-©JamesMitchell-94The Canary Islands, saw the RSM crew led by Yannis Pagoulatos take home the trophy.  The team won two races, and consistently came home in the top three to finish with 11 points.

IE team 1, led by Santiago Alvarez de Toledo were excluded from racing on day 1, with technical problems, but managed to score 4 1st places and a second on day 2, to finish in second place  with 13 points.

Third place was taken by the highly fancied INSEAD/HEC/RSM mixed team, while last year’s winners, LBS1 came in 5th.

The regatta had a new format this year, with an owners’ representative on board each boat to advise the team and provide safety back- up.

Strong Line- Up for MBA Winter Regatta

The Crews will be lining up for the first race of the MBA racing season – the first race of the MBA Winter Regatta –  on Friday morning off Puerto Calero in Lanzarote, The Canary Islands.

Last year’s MBAWR winners, LBS will be up against a very strong mixed crew from HEC/Insead/RSM: These two are expected to be fighting for the honours.  Up against them are another crew from LBS, two from IE and one from RSM, all vying to cause an upset.  The “A” division crews will be sailing 4-5 man J80 sportsboats.

For the first time the Winter Regatta also has a “B” division, sailing in 36- 40ft boats. IE has sent a massive three boat contingent to add to their A division crews. There’s also a crew from HEC to challenge for the Div B title.

The racing takes place on Friday and Saturday, and the crews can expect a warm welcome from the Canarian weather and the local hospitality at the events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The weather forecast with 6 days to go is for strong Northerly winds on Friday, calming somewhat on Saturday.
